Plastic Surgery Procedures: Liposuction

Liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed today. It is indicated for patients who have localized areas of excess fat that affect their figure. Liposuction is not a way to lose weight. Nor will Liposuction reduce the actual weight on the scale by very much.

Liposuction will however dramatically change the body contours of a patient's figure. Small incisions are made followed by injections of a local anesthetic to the regions being targeted. Next, small canulas are used to aspirate or liposuction the excess fatty tissue out. This fat will not come back or "re-grow."

However, if a patient puts on weight, the fat cells that have been left behind can double, triple or quadruple in size. Its very important that a patient maintain a stable body weight following liposuction.

Liposuction can be performed in any area where there is excess fat. Most commonly we see liposuction performed in the abdomen, hips, back rolls and inner and outer thighs. Liposuction can also be used for fat collections located under the chin.

Occasionally we will liposuction areas such as fatty tissues under the arms and legs. Liposuction plastic surgery is usually performed under a general anesthetic. Liposuction can be done as an out-patient cosmetic procedure and typically requires two to three weeks for recovery.

During that time it is recommend that patients wear a compression garment or girdle to squeeze the area we've operated on and prevent swelling and bruising. Most liposuction patients are off of pain medications within three to four days and can return to work in a week.
