The need today for rest, relaxation and energy renewal is an important aspect of our practice. Each patient’s healthcare needs to include effective treatment of those sore, tight aching muscles that are so easy to disregard when we are busy. Our Massage Therapist, Jessica A. Ahearn, R.N., LMT (MA 42866) uses a combination of Neuromuscular Therapy / Deep Tissue Massage, Myofascial Release, Postural Assessment / Training, Relaxation Massage, Hot Stone Massage, and many other advanced Massage Therapy Treatment approaches. She will help you significantly reduce the tension you are holding. Regular massage therapy sessions will have a profound effect on the way you feel and will bring you back in touch with your body.
Relaxation Massage
We so rarely take time to truly relax, calm our minds and properly breathe. Our Relaxation Massage utilizes Classic Swedish Techniques performed in a slow, smooth, flowing style to decrease stress, improve overall circulation, increase range of motion and relieve muscular tension. This form of massage is known to decrease blood pressure and is an important aspect of post-operative therapy.
Myofascial Release (MFR)
Fascia is our connective tissue and serves to structurally support the body including the muscles and stabilize our posture. The term Myofascial describes the connectedness between muscle and fascia. It is interwoven and is affected by the same stressors. When used repetitively, our soft tissues can shorten, tighten, lose elasticity and strength. This leads to pain, joint, postural and circulatory problems.
MFR is often applied at the start of your massage therapy session. This treatment is done with minimal to no lotion and can range from gentle to fairly aggressive. This treatment will soften, lengthen and release the tough connective tissues of the body. Through the application of relaxing sustained pressure to the restricted areas, motion will be restored, allowing for fluid-like movement and strong dynamic posture.
Postural Assessment and Training
Our postural muscles are involved in all activities which require stamina and endurance. They help us to stay upright throughout the day by maintaining a static prolonged contraction but are often prone to dysfunction. When postural muscles are dysfunctional they also tend to shorten in length which leads to muscle injury, a decrease in range of motion, and poor posture.
Postural assessment is used to determine the areas of your body affected by myofascial shortening. Body reading techniques and postural muscle tests are performed to inspect for symmetry, proper rotation and balance in all of your joints. Once this assessment is complete, your massage therapist will design a treatment plan to determine which therapies will provide the greatest benefit for you.
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) / Deep Tissue Massage
There are a multitude of neuromuscular treatments available to ease the pain often caused by stressed muscles and connective tissue. Trigger points are associated with referred pain patterns such as shooting pain along the back of the neck or radiating pain down the arm. In addition, tender points may cause pain locally. These symptoms are treatable with firm deep pressure and minimal pain during treatment. NMT will alleviate muscle pain, muscular tension, anxiety, stress and many other restrictions to your health.
Some of the treatment modalities utilized in NMT therapy include hot and cold therapy, muscle decongestion, Myofascial Release, and Muscle Energy Techniques (active stretching). Your massage therapist will ensure that the pace of therapy and the amount of pressure used is comfortable for you.
Hot Stone Massage
Hot Stone Massage uses smooth, heated stones made of black volcanic rock. These stones hold heat very well and are placed at various stress points on the body. The stones will immediately increase blood flow to those areas allowing for muscle relaxation and pain relief. This form of massage is deeply soothing and prepares the body for deep tissue therapy. You will feel lasting muscle relaxation along with tension and pain relief as you are massaged with warm soothing stones and the hands of your massage therapist.
