Tummy Tucks are operations that we, as plastic surgeons, refer to as Abdominoplasties. Tummy Tucks can be separated into mini abdominoplasties, standard abdominoplasties, or extended abdominoplasties.
A mini Tummy Tuck or mini abdominoplasty usually requires a shorter scar hidden below the bikini line and involves the removal of a small amount of lower abdominal skin combined with a tightening of the abdominal wall muscles. This is a way to repair damage done though pregnancies were the muscles have been stretched and thinned. No amount of sit-ups can repair the damage done by pregnancies. A Tummy Tuck (abdominoplasty) is an excellent way to correct this problem.
For patients who have had a problem with a greater amount of laxity and who require a greater removal of skin, a longer incision is required. Frequently this means that we must reposition the belly button. In fact, the belly button itself stays in its place attached to the abdominal wall muscles but the skin that surrounds it gets released and pulled down, removing the excess skin and resulting in a new position for the belly button.
In my opinion, a great Tummy Tuck can sometimes be marred by a poor belly button scar. This is something that I apply a great deal of concern and interest in during Tummy Tuck surgery.
We have developed Tummy Tuck techniques that hide the scare within the belly button and don't expose the scar on the outside. This is the measure of a great Tummy Tuck.
An extended Tummy Tuck means that there is an even longer incision and its most commonly used for patients who have had bariatric surgery and have an excessive amount of loose skin around the abdomen and hips. Sometimes this incision can travel 3/4 the way around the waist line. However, they usually result in very significant improvements in body contouring.
